Student Practice Reflection - Lesson 4
Student Practice Reflection - Lesson 4
Today I did not feel anxious like what happened last time. Also, I slept well last night. My professor came to observe this lesson as well, but my performance was not influenced. I was enjoying my teaching as well as my students.
The topic was magic tricks. It was quite dynamic and so many things happened. I showed students two pieces of magic tricks to start the lesson. One of them was about changing the position of a rubber band on my fingers, and the other trick was too obvious for some of the students and they questioned the trick, which made me embarrassed for a moment. However, after that everything went well as I predicted. The only thing that could be improved is that it should be more flexible in using materials because it was the first class of the day and it usually starts late, which made the lesson shorter. Sometimes, maybe it is better to cut into the topic directly, so the class may run smoothly within the limited time, and the teacher, I, could have enough time to wrap up the lesson. Also, in this lesson, a lot of materials were needed for students to operate. I was not able to prepare for them in advance, which took some time, too. Because of that, I was not consistent. Firstly, I said they were supposed to work in groups because I did not know if there were enough materials for them. In a while, more materials were provided, and I asked them to work in pairs. Next time, I would contact my mentor teachers in advance and ask for help with possible needed materials in advance; hence, the lesson will run smoother and more coherent.
To sum up, I am satisfied with the lesson because the students enjoyed it very much. My mentor teacher said she liked the activity of arranging sentences about doing a certain magic trick in order. Instead of writing numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 before sentences on a piece of paper, cutting those sentences down and asking students to order may be more hands-on for students, and it may help them to be engaged in the activity as well as to visualise the steps of the magic trick clearer because it made them feasible to follow.
From all my experiences, lessons that the teachers enjoy, the students will also enjoy. The fact that you didnt let that anxiety overtake you is great. I think your general confidence resonated with the kids and anything negative didnt overtake and you used it as a learning experience. I still can have trouble with my nerves with lessons so its good that you focused and enjoyed being the teacher.
