Student Practice - ERROR MANAGEMENT
ERROR MANAGEMENT
Observation date: 21/02/2022
In my opinion, error management is quite sensitive because it is a double-edged sword. In other words, when learners are willing to accept corrections, it reinforces the process of learning. On the other hand, if Ss harbour a negative attitude about it, it will destroy the confidence of learners.
From the observation, I noticed that T occasionally corrected Ss, especially when they made common mistakes that their classmates had the same. Usually, Ss had grammatical mistakes, which were corrected by T. During the homeroom hour, Ss were supposed to talk about their weekend, which means they needed to use past simple tense. When Ss made mistakes in terms of tense, they were corrected by T. For instance, a student said "I wake up...". Then, T corrected them immediately by saying "I woke up...". Lastly, the student repeated what the teacher said. There was more the same kind of grammatical mistakes, which were corrected in the same way. Previously, Ss occasionally corrected each other as well but it was rare. T usually pointed out typical mistakes Ss made recently. Also, not every sentence was corrected.
All in all, error management is also a significant aspect that should be taken into consideration because it influences the accuracy of speaking and the attitude of learning. Some Ss expect to have corrections from their teacher in that they believe it is conducive for them to improve their English. However, some would take it as a problem or trouble since they don't want to be called out in front of their classmates. Or someone has high expectations of themselves and they may have a tendency of self-denial.
