one methodology handbook in the first semester
It is never easy to finish reading such a thick book for me, but I felt a sense of achievement when I did it successful. It has 386 pages, including 24 chapters with extra follow-up tasks. I usually read it when I was on the bed and ready for sleeping. The book is really significant in guiding English teachers and it is recommended by most teachers. Fortunately, it is available online with different editions.
The book contains almost every aspects in English teaching, such as the description of learners and teachers, which does not only talk about methodologies but also the latest theories and technologies in teaching. However, I enjoyed reading the examples the most, since it is imaginable and vivd in my mind. And one thing that I was surprised by is that it includes the topic of culture, which is really astonishing because this is a point which is usually ignored by other similar books. It enabled me to figure out some questions I have ever come up with since last year and allowed me to explore more about it. Also, I am impressed by chapter 4: DESCRIBING TEACHERS the most because I referred to it when I wrote the essay about the role of the teacher in modern education. Thanks to Harmer, I got the chance to see the roles of the teacher comprehensively from the bird's eye view.
I had some relevant experience in teaching English before, so it is easier for me to understand it, it made me remind of my previous teaching occasionally, and it enabled me to think what I should do in my future teaching. Absolutely, it also brought me many new concepts, such as learner autonomy that I have never heard of before, so I learnt a lot from it as well. Stay hungry, stay foolish. However, there is one thing that I disliked that is the way that the author lists his ideas in alphabetic letters, which was hard for me to get accustomed to, in that I am used to numbers instead. Apart from that, I was engaged in reading it.
It was just a pity for me that I did not able to watch the DVD it is attached. I believe I would have probed more intriguing and essential elements if I had watched the DVD. I am really curious about it. I hope I could get access to it in the near future. Last but last least, I recommend prospective teacher to have the book on the bookshelf or in the electronic devices, and I just decided to read it one more time after some time as I will definitely obtain some different feeling and have deeper understanding about teaching English.
