Reflection on Grade 0, "Żagle" Primary School.

General reflection

The first impression is not satisfying because the classroom environment is not well-organised, but there are still numerous aspects we can draw on. The teacher and students were energetic, so they both had fun teaching and learning. Also, considering the age of those children (possibly 6-7 years old), it is understandable why they were so exuberant in class. At this age, they are usually eager to act out. Meanwhile, their attention span is quite short. Another thing is that this is just a short clip, so it is probably not that reasonable to criticize the whole lesson because the short clip may be the highlight of the whole lesson. If so, it is normal for students to behave like that. In addition, he used flashcards and the "What is missing" game to make the class very engaging. Overall, it is meaningful for me to rethink the class environment.

Classroom discipline maintenance

The teacher did not set rules for children, so students were not disciplined. Some of them were following the teacher; however, some of them were ignored. The teacher tried to get the attention of students, but he failed to do it by only repeating the "shush" gesture again and again. What is more, he counted backwards to grab students' attention.

Possible improvements

The teacher can help students to be aware of disciplines. Also, it is clear that students are divided into 4 groups in the classroom. And I hold the hypothesis that it will be better for the teacher to control the students if students are arranged as a circle in the classroom. Next, the teacher should at least walk around the classroom to interact with almost every student instead of standing in front of the class most of the time.

Error correction strategies

The teacher kept repeating the word that he expected to hear from the children. For instance, when the children were wrong in the last game section, he kept repeating to tell the students that they were supposed to answer the question with numbers in English.

Visual aids

He used a large number of flashcards based on the topics of numbers and animals. Also, he used a picture of a football court to play a group game. During the course of the game, students were divided into 2 groups, so that they were more engaged in it because teamwork is more competitive.

  1. Well, I agree with what you’ve written here. I like how you listed all the reasons for not judging the whole lesson and not defining it right away. It’s very important to be aware of all the aspects that may hinder the lesson, both in terms of observations and your own lessons.
I’m glad you paid attention to his lack of movements around the class. It’s not only difficult to hear what students are saying (and if their pronunciation is correct) but also to keep them disciplined and focused on the topic. Therefore, it was really nice to read about your reflections.
