Lekcja języka angielskiego - Dąbrówka

General reflection 👇

It is a 34-minute complete lesson. I buried myself in watching it and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Students were engaged and the class was well-organised as well. Though from my perspective, there were things that could be done better, it is a constructive class in Vocabulary teaching. However, there was a picture book that was used to do storytelling. Hence, there was a bit of Reading in the class. Therefore, it was a little perplexing about the aims of the class. Is it a Vocab lesson about colours and numbers or a Reading lesson? Or it was the beginning of a Reading lesson so that the teacher used plenty of time to introduce topic-related words. If so, I like the idea of drawing a teddy bear and spider with different moods, which was used to teach some adjectives and tell the story about a witch and her cat.

I appreciate her control of the class, especially when she asked the students to move from their seats to the carpet, which was really natural because students were not given instructions to move from one to another directly; however, they got input from the teacher in terms of words on the topics of colours and numbers. What is more, "Run and Touch" is a really interesting game because students were divided into 2 groups, each time the fastest one child can get a point and children love this kind of competitive game very much. In addition, I am also intrigued by the idea of giving flashcards to students and asking them to return in the end.

Classroom discipline maintenance

The teacher used countdown twice from 10 to maintain discipline when necessary. Also, I really love the idea of "transferring" students to the carpet by asking questions about colours to revise the vocabulary. Later, the teacher grouped children into "bananas" and "apples" and asked them to move around in order according to their groups, which made the class organised well. Lastly, I can see "stir and settle" clearly in her teaching as well. Children were walking to a certain place sometimes and then came back to sit still from time to time.

Possible improvements💪 

In the warm-up section, I believe there could more students' talk/speaking by giving them time to let students ask the question "how are you?" to each other instead of doing it all by the teacher because "how are you?" is a very basic question which is probably a bit challenging for the children but won't exceed their zone of proximal development. The last point I would like to mention is that the teacher used the word "super" to praise the children, which is derived from Polish. From my perspective, English native speakers probably do not use the word to praise students, or they use it but not that often. Meanwhile, there are better other options to choose from, so it would be better if the teacher used "excellent", "well done", "good job" and so on.

Error correction strategies

There were not many errors. The most obvious thing is that children were speaking L1 occasionally, but the teacher encouraged them to speak in English and ask students to use English.

Visual aids

Drawing on the blackboard and flashcards helped the teacher grab students' attention and made the class more intriguing. The appealing picture book also can be considered as a kind of visual aid that succeeded in getting students' attention.
